Using downhill skis with special "randonee'" bindings and climbing skins which allow you to ski/climb uphill without sliding backwards, they found pristine powder, while still inside the Tahoe Donner boundaries. The Sunrise bowls are what you see to the west of the Tahoe Donner Ski hill, and the ridge there is the western boundary of Tahoe Donner property. It is a great place for hiking and mountain biking in the summer and fall, and it rewards anyone willing to "earn your turns" with great, close to home, backcountry skiing. It was named for Spring skiing there - corn snow is magic to ski on and this East facing slope gets first light, changing hard pack Spring crust into the fabled and sought after corn snow.
